Game emulation on phones is pretty easy to do from a technical requirement standpoint, especially for devices running Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite series chipsets. That is, unless you’re looking to emulate PC games, games from the Nintendo Switch, or games from the PS3. Game emulation can actually be pretty demanding on system hardware. Even more so if those games are from newer systems. Although there isn’t much of a technical issue running emulators for retro consoles on a Snapdragon 8 Elite phone, the same can’t be said for trying to emulate a game from the PS3.
However, there is potentially going to be a way to overcome this hurdle in the not-so-distant future. Some development work is being done on a Turnip driver for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5’s Adreno 840 GPU, and this could be the push the hardware needs to make PC, Switch, and PS3 emulation work on devices running that chip.

Spotted by Android Authority, a post on a mesa Gitlab page details development work being done for the Adreno 840 GPU that would make emulation from these newer platforms possible. The Adreno 830, which is from last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, should end up being compatible in theory. However, one user on the Gitlab post mentions that there is still no kernel support. So, it’s unclear if it would take much longer than the work being done for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.
It’s also worth noting that emulation of games from these newer platforms isn’t impossible even now. However, performance isn’t necessarily buttery smooth. The work that’s being done should lighten the load a bit and make things less janky. Emulation is also not something that we’re condoning. As most companies, especially Nintendo, aren’t fond of people emulating games from their hardware. Putting that aside, if you do emulate games on your phone, this development work may be something to keep an eye on.
