Meta-owned WhatsApp has introduced a new on-device translation feature that lets users instantly translate their chats without leaving the app. Available across all 180 countries, the update supports six languages on Android, English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic, while iOS users can access translations in over 19 languages through Apple’s Translate integration.

WhatsApp states, “Users can now long-press a message in a different language, tap ‘Translate’, and choose the language. Android users can also turn on automatic translation for entire chats. Translations happen on-device, keeping chats private. The rollout starts today in select languages, with more to follow.”

On iPhones, WhatsApp’s new translation feature supports over 19 languages, including widely spoken options such as English, Hindi, Spanish, Arabic, French, German, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, and Mandarin Chinese, along with others like Dutch, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.
WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature that allows users to translate messages directly within the app. To use it, simply long-press a message, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, and select “Translate.” From there, you can choose your preferred language, and the translation will appear instantly.

The feature works seamlessly across one-on-one chats, group conversations, and even Channel updates. Importantly, translations are performed entirely on-device, meaning WhatsApp itself doesn’t access your chats. Users will, however, need to download language packs for each language they want to translate to or from.
Android users get an additional benefit, the ability to enable automatic translation for entire chat threads, so all future messages in a conversation are translated in real time. The feature is currently rolling out to iOS and Android, though availability for Windows and WhatsApp Web remains uncertain.
The WhatsApp support page notes, “Translating messages on WhatsApp is only available on certain devices and may not be available to you yet. In the meantime, we recommend keeping WhatsApp updated on your device so you can get the feature as soon as it’s available.”
