YouTube has introduced its Premium Lite subscription in India as a more affordable alternative to the standard YouTube Premium plan. Priced at Rs. 89 per month, it matches the cost of the student Premium subscription and provides a budget-friendly option for users who want ad-free viewing without the full suite of Premium features.

The Premium Lite plan offers ad-free video playback for “most” content across categories such as gaming, fashion, beauty, news, and more, though the platform did not clarify exactly which videos may still show ads. In contrast, the full YouTube Premium subscription ensures ad-free playback for all videos.

Unlike YouTube Premium, the Lite plan does not include background playback, offline downloads, or YouTube Music. The subscription is compatible across devices, including phones, laptops, and smart TVs. Ads may still appear on music content, Shorts, and during searches or browsing.
YouTube Premium Lite was first launched in the US in March 2025 at $7.99 per month (about Rs. 709), making the Indian launch significantly more affordable. For comparison, the yearly YouTube Premium plan in India costs Rs. 1,490, while individual, family, and two-member plans range from Rs. 149 to Rs. 299 per month.
In March, YouTube announced it had crossed 125 million global subscribers across its Music and Premium services. Overall, Alphabet has surpassed 270 million paid subscriptions, driven primarily by YouTube and Google One, according to CEO Sundar Pichai. While Alphabet does not report YouTube’s total quarterly revenues, it revealed in October 2024 that the platform’s revenue exceeded $50 billion over the previous four quarters.
