Amazon Fire OS is a widely popular operating system powering most of the old and new Fire TV devices. The latest Fire TV Stick 4K Select debuted with the new Vega OS, in-house developed by Amazon. Ever since, there have been rumors indicating that the company is planning to replace the Fire OS with Vega operating system. However, putting an end to those rumors, the Alexa-maker has assured Fire OS staying.
Fire OS to coexist with the new Vega OS
Amazon has shared a statement to Android Authority implying Vega OS primarily “expands — not replaces —” the OS strategy. The company believes that it is still a multi-OS company and isn’t abandoning the Android-based Fire OS.
The new Vega OS, on the other hand, is here to stay. It further notes that the Vega OS is for flexibility, to create premium experiences for all devices; especially on the affordable ones. They include devices with low memory footprints. And, also on potentially larger platforms that run AI programs, like Alexa+, for example.
It is good to know Amazon is diversifying its operating system game with multi-OS support. According to The Athletic, Amazon is planning to clamp down on the privacy and illegal streaming problems. These are seen on the current Android-based Fire TV sticks. The other side of the story tells us that Amazon could have developed the Vega OS to tackle such problems from the start.
The report has further shared data based on YouGov Sport. It indicates that about 4.7 million UK adults consumed illegal streams over the past six months. These streams were on Fire Stick (running on Fire OS) and other IPTV devices.
They comprise apps that are majorly sideloaded or unauthorized installs, which happens to be possible on Fire OS due to its open nature. And, Amazon is already trying hard to identify and block such apps that stream pirated content or illegal streams. The rollout has begun in Germany and France and will likely expand worldwide in the coming weeks.
The Vega OS, on the other hand, wants to curb side-loading with its Linux-based operating system. From the start, it is emphasizing on this aspect and strengthening its security. Regardless, both operating systems are staying and expanding, and it will be encouraging to see these protections expand to older Amazon devices as well.
